Stocksigns and Links Signs Create ‘One Stop’ S
January 2011
Stocksigns and Links Signs unveiled their intentions to collaborate in a partner project under the Crossrail Signs label at the London Rail Show held at the America Square Conference Centre on the 29th June 2010
With over 85 years of joint experience within the manufacture and installation of specialist signage and poster frames, this collaboration puts Crossrail Signs at the forefront of supply into the rail sector.
Crossrail, the new high frequency, convenient and accessible railway for London and the South East, will be looking to upgrade 28 existing surface stations, restore 11 chief surface station and nine sub-surface stations. Signs will be a main component to the project both temporary during construction and permanent signs systems including rail signs, safety signs and car park signage for operational and customer interfaces. All of which Crossrail Signs manufacture as well as supply the whole project management solution from design to installation – offering the project a true one stop shop. When the service starts, Crossrail trains will journey from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via new twin tunnels below central London. It will link Heathrow Airport, the West End, the City of London and Canary Wharf. Crossrail will make travelling in the region easier and quicker. It will lessen crowding on London’s transport network, by operating with mainline-size trains transporting more than 1500 passengers in each train during peak periods. It is projected that Crossrail will increase London’s rail transport system by more than 10 per cent.
Stocksigns has been responsible for providing signage to many stations since the beginning of the Public Private Partnership to upgrade the Tube network in 1999. Stocksigns has a long history of manufacturing signs to London Underground dating back to the 1940s. As a long-established manufacturer and contractor to Transport for London (TfL), London Buses and London Underground, Stocksigns has been supplying a wide range of signage products including: road traffic, health and safety, and passenger information signage, utilising a wide range of materials including specialist vitreous enamel, illuminated and LED displays. Stocksigns has been providing quality signage to TfL for in excess of 75 years, contributing to the iconic aesthetics of London as a whole, strengthening a consistent familiarity, trustworthiness of our services, longevity and pride in London.
Links Signs concentrate on the specialist installation of signage and poster frames across the TfL estate. They have been carrying out installations for over twenty years for LUL and have dedicated highly trained work teams. Their success comes from first-class back-up through office and site-based project managers.
Crossrail Signs will provide a complete process of survey, design, manufacture and installation ensuring a consistent approach in the delivery of signage for the public transport sector.
“Links Signs and Stocksigns have a strong background of working successfully together in the rail industry over the years, so the opportunity to collaborate under the banner of Crossrail Signs was a natural progression….”
Mr. Tony Kidby, managing director
Links Signs
Crossrail Signs is providing a single source, fully managed design, manufacture and installation service where quality of service and product is assured throughout every part.
The 30,000sq ft production facility offers a full range of manufacturing capabilities including sophisticated sheet metal forming equipment.
Production of the highly specialised vitreous enamel signs is undertaken on site at Redhill in Surrey, just 20 miles from Central London. Recent investment in a state-of-the-art energy management scheme allows the company to maximise its cost efficiency whilst reducing the environmental impact.
Crossrail Signs was formed to help pool resources and expertise to gain economies of scale and a well rounded capability base, which could then be utilised by the project contractors. Stocksigns is the only UK company to both manufacture and install vitreous enamel signage and Links Signs has specialist installation experience and so are the complete partnership to provide signs for the Crossrail project.
Crossrail Signs are positioned to be able to help architects and designers at an early stage to avoid design concerns further down the line.Their extensive experience in the market enables them to be ‘up to speed’ at a very early stage in the project, already briefed in the correct protocol and aware of potential pitfalls that may be encountered during projects of this scale. This very early involvement means that Crossrail Signs can work with designers and TfL to develop and refine the product whilst maintaining the brand image.
In a recent press release issued by TfL, following the announcement of the Government’s decision to protect the Crossrail programme from reduction in scope or funding, Terry Morgan, chairman for the Crossrail project, said “Crossrail will persevere in delivering value for money and we continue to find the most cost-effective solutions to deliver this world-class affordable railway.”
The Crossrail scheme will benefit from the collaboration of Stocksigns and Links Signs.
“By combining the expertise of both Stocksigns and Links Signs this will provide a cost-effective ‘one-stop-shop’ solution to the Crossrail scheme,” said Mr. Bruce Main, managing director of Stocksigns.

Digital Print Displays for London Gatwick Airport.
December 2010
Stocksigns Produces Large Format Digital Print Displays for London Gatwick Airport.
The £1 billion refurbishment project at London Gatwick Airport is underway. A big investment in times of economic cut backs and consumer uncertainty but the new management company understands the need and are determined to create an airport that can compete on a global stage and create the best experience for it's travellers both now and in the future.
As part of their re-launch of the airport under new management London Gatwick Airport were eager to promote the airport as a top destination and to promote tourism in the South East as a whole. They commissioned a series of large prints of local iconic attractions and scenes to be positioned at the entrance of the newly refurbished mono rail, between the South and North Terminals. At this critical stage of the project, London Gatwick Airport were keen to lift their profile and the signs and graphics created were the first opportunity they had to demonstrate their new logo and needed a supplier that would understand their needs. They contacted Stocksigns to produce the images because they were a local manufacturer but also because they had the capabilities to meet the high quality specification required and within the tight deadlines the project demanded. The four 10m x 3m Rotunda graphics depict scenes from Hastings Beach, The Brighton Pavilion, The Seven Sisters and a London night time skyscape.
London Gatwick Airport have been impressed with the production and service they received and have now commissioned Stocksigns to produce the final scene for this project, a huge 14m x 3m panoramic beach scene which is due to go into production shortly.
"Being a semi-professional photographer myself I can appreciate the intense quality of print that is needed to reproduce the true feeling of an image. I knew Stocksigns would be able to produce this quality even on these huge scales. We could also deliver the time scales and installation service levels required while keeping within the agreed budget." said David Harbison, Senior Project Manager for Stocksigns.
Stocksigns have also produced a number of other graphics for the airport including the glass highlighting window graphics.
