Steiner Go Green With Relcross
November 2011
The Steiner Academy in Much Dewchurch, Hereford has fitted Hadrian Steel toilet cubicles from Relcross in their new boys and girls toilets. The new cubicles are in striking RAL 6018 Yellow Green and look dramatically brighter than most toilets.
The Steiner Waldorf approach is based on the simple but profound insight that children learn in different ways at different stages of their development. Pupils study traditional subjects through distinctive and time-tested teaching methods that serve their intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual development in ways that are suited to their age.
The school was originally founded in 1983 as the Hereford Waldorf School, part of the international network of over 1000 Steiner schools worldwide. In 2008 it evolved into the Steiner Academy, Hereford. Academies are all ability, state funded schools established and managed by sponsors - in this case the Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship. Surrounded as they are by some of the country’s most beautiful landscape, the Academy specialises in the natural environment and it was that specialism that led indirectly to the choice of Hadrian Toilet Cubicles.
The growth to a state funded academy meant a considerable increase in the size of the co-educational school to over 400 pupils from early childhood through to school leaving age (3-16). This in turn led to a major building project to extend and develop the original Victorian school building into a modern, fit for purpose facility. Working closely with Edinburgh based architect John Renshaw, the work is now nearly complete. The latest phase included class gardens and landscaping, a drainage system based on natural filtration, a multi-use games area, a footpath, cycle path and car park as well as interior elements such as the toilets.
Sustainability was a vital aspect of the specifying philosophy and both the School and John Renshaw were impressed with Hadrian’s green credentials. Hadrian was the first in the industry to embrace environmentally friendly powder coating technology. The powder paints are safe on the environment as there is virtually no waste, energy consumption is low and there are no solvent emissions. All of Hadrian's products feature a high recycled content with the powder coated cubicles featuring 36% post consumer material and 14% pre-consumer material. For stainless steel those figures rise to 76% and 15% respectively and Hadrian also offer a solid plastic partition made from 100% post consumer re-cycled material. Even Hadrian's literature is printed on FSC certified stock, which contributes to the conservation and responsible management of forests.
As well as their environmental virtues, Hadrian cubicles are highly durable and easy to clean. They also come in an almost unlimited range of colours which was a further attraction for the Academy. Different areas of the school follow broad colour themes and new adjoining boys and girls toilets are in the ‘green area’ and so they decided to use a bright, vibrant green that completely lifts the facilities away from the usual sombre, drab styles favoured by so many. The pupils were closely involved in the choices and the tile splash backs for the basins were made by the pupils in the school workshop.
The boys’ toilet features one full toilet cubicle with concealed cistern and 3 waterless urinal cubicles. The girls’ has 4 toilets with concealed cisterns. All are floor mounted and overhead braced. Installation was carried out by the Academy’s own project team and Project Manager Chloe Kidel is very pleased with the final installation. “They look great” she said “and fully in keeping with the ethos of the Steiner Academy.”
Relcross Sales and Marketing Director Stuart McMaster is also delighted. “We offer Hadrian Cubicles in a vast range of over 200 colours and it’s wonderful to see someone using that option to the full to create something out of the norm.”

Hereford Cathedral School Use Relcross Hardware
November 2011
When a school is based right in the centre of a bustling city and is spread over a variety of premises, it’s not surprising that it faces security issues not commonly found in other schools. Normally straightforward issues like emergency exits take on new dimensions when such exits open onto busy public streets. Hereford Cathedral School turned to Relcross, via BM Ltd of Halesowen, when faced with this situation when their new gymnasium was built in 2009. Relcross in turn recommended their Von Duprin 22 CE marked escape device.
Hereford Cathedral School is one of the oldest schools in the country, probably existing as a song school to the Cathedral in the 7th century. The school was re-founded in the 1380s. Since then Hereford Cathedral School has been variously housed in and around the Cathedral, its Close and Cloisters. In the 1970s co-education was introduced and now there are roughly equal numbers of girls and boys in the 800 pupils with ages ranging from 3 to 18.
The increase in the number of pupils has been matched by the acquisition of properties in and around Castle Street and the Close. Two historic buildings have added purpose-built facilities including a gymnasium which, it is intended, will be offered for public use too. Accordingly an entrance was included that opens onto a public street but until that facility is developed it forms a vital emergency exit for the school users.
These double doors feature two point locking via a surface mounted vertical rod and two Von Duprin type 22 escape devices. These are CE marked and have been independently tested to 500,000 cycles so are ideal for high traffic environments. Von Duprin devices are renowned for their stylish but very rugged construction. In fact the Relcross web site features a video of a fire truck running right over a type 99 exit device which can still function afterwards, unlike some of the competitors similarly tested (see www.relcross.co.uk )
Sales Director Stuart McMaster said “We only supply escape hardware that is CE marked, will withstand heavy usage over a long period and has assured re-locking after every operation. It must be 100% reliable. To test this out we went back to the Hereford Cathedral School 18 months after the devices were fitted and they were as good as new - as were the LCN 1460 door closers we supplied at the same time for the various changing room and classroom doors in this building.”
Premises Manager Robert Good concurred. “We’ve had no problems since the initial installation and they are all performing as new.”
