Protect and Serve - Icopal Company Profile

Protect and Serve - Icopal Company Profile
Having started business in 1876, Icopal, the world leader in building protection boasts over 160 years experience with one of the most comprehensive ranges of construction membranes, support services and insurance-backed roofing guarantees available. With a recent sales restructure and significant investment in its Manchester production facility, Icopal is committed to delivering high quality products to market and strives to exceed its merchant customers’ expectations.
With UK operations out of the newly refurbished Manchester site, the sales and technical teams support over 2,000 Icopal stockists throughout the UK. With its specialist roofing and waterproofing technology important brands such as EcoActiv, Monarplan and the Decra Roofing System are delivered to merchants, in order to satisfy the needs of specifiers and installers every day.
The recently refurbished plant at Manchester has seen a major upgrade that incorporates green manufacturing processes in order to minimise the embodied carbon, while a lean approach to operations implemented across the UK business ensures orders can be met on time and in full.
The investment comes at the same time as the appointment of a new MD. Matthew Scoffield joined Icopal in 2011, providing the manufacturer with a new clear vision. He explains why the Manchester plant is so important to the Icopal brand: “With this considerable investment in new facilities, Icopal will further improve its offering and approach to current and future market conditions as well as adding to its product quality and manufacturing efficiency. This investment will also help Icopal to retain its strong manufacturing presence in the UK, supporting the local economy.”
Icopal recognises that a wide raft of product development is key to delivering choice in a range of products that provide merchants with alternatives they can pass on to their customers. For example the latest product launch has responded to the growing demand for environmental roofing products. Eco-Activ includes Noxite. The range provides solutions, which work actively with nature, helping to reduce air pollution, cut CO2 emissions and improve energy efficiency. Noxite itself is an innovative single ply roofing membrane being actively specified for use in the local authority sector amongst others. The product uses fully recycled bitumen with a surface that converts harmful NOx particles in the atmosphere into harmless nitrates, which can be washed away during regular rainfall.
Product development is driven not only by the need for carbon reduction but also by the changing legislative demands placed on end users. AirSmart is a product that exemplifies this. It presents two very strong, lightweight vapour control membranes that provide a complete airtight solution to enhance thermal performance and reduce the risk of condensation and moisture in buildings.
The company’s extensive product range is underpinned by exceptional customer service from a team, which is focused on the individual needs of the market sectors it serves. With a national network of key account managers, product managers and technical experts, builders’ merchant and end users receive the very best advice and technical support, over the phone and onsite. A rigorous approach to sales leads means opportunities are pushed back through the merchant branches.
”We aim to provide everything the merchant needs to maximise the opportunities provided by the market for waterproofing and building protection products successfully,” says Matthew Scoffield, “With an eye to the latest market requirements, Icopal is positioned to ensure our customers are always in a position to respond.”

Light In Every Way

Light In Every Way
Many local authority properties built in the fifties, sixties and seventies have pitched roofs covered with felt and, over time, this felt has deteriorated, needing replacement or repair. Here, Lee Nichols of Icopal’s Decra Roof Systems looks at how lightweight tiles can offer local authorities a great solution, whilst also meeting a need to reduce their environmental impact.
Deteriorated roof felt can cause real issues linked to moisture within a property, which results in condensation, mould and an unhealthy internal environment for the tenant. One option of course is a whole roof replacement, which involves the stripping back of the original felt and replacing with new. This is not only expensive but very also disruptive. However, if the felt hasn’t gone completely past its useable condition, fixing lightweight tiles over the existing roof could be an alternative – and one that not only meets the need for repair but also far wider demands.
