Sandtoft’s handmade ‘Goxhill’ clay plain roo
April 2011
A luxury hotel in the heart of the historic Syon Park in West London has been built using Sandtoft’s handmade ‘Goxhill’ clay plain roof tiles.
Designed by Ettwein Bridges Architects, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel sits alongside Syon House, which has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family for over 400 years.
Located in a Grade 1 listed parkland setting, the hotel had to be sympathetically designed to reflect its historic surroundings. Sandtoft’s Goxhill clay plain tile in an ‘Autumn Brown’ colour was specified by Ettwein Bridges Architects and over 60,000 have been used to roof the building.
Theo Manzaroli, architect for Ettwein Bridges Architects, said: “We looked at a number of different manufacturers, before specifying Sandtoft’s Goxhill tile. We needed a tile that would complement the existing building materials on the Estate and the Goxhill was the most appropriate in terms of its appearance.”
Andrew Lawton, sales director for Sandtoft, added: “Our Goxhill handmade tile gives a rich textured roof. The real character comes from the way the tile is handled by the maker. Each of our craftsmen does things slightly differently which makes the tiles, and therefore, the roof unique.”
The 200-acre Syon Park lies only eight miles from central London and looks out across the River Thames onto Kew Gardens. Originally the site of a medieval abbey, Syon was named after Mount Zion in the Holy Land. The construction of the hotel included restoring a number of historic features on the Estate and parts of the landscape originally designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.
Sandtoft’s Neo Pantile for stunning countryside

Sandtoft’s Neo Pantile is an ideal match for stunning countryside development
Pittencrieff, a specialist housebuilding and property development company has selected Sandtoft’s Neo Pantile for its debut residential development located next to the village of Saline in Fife, Scotland.
‘Kinneddar Steading’ was formerly a farm, comprising a 19th-century farm house and several ancillary buildings. Each property has been extensively renovated by Pittencrieff to create eight high-specification homes.
Calum Mitchell, architectural technician for Pittencrieff LLP said: “The local planners insisted that we used a clay pantile as these were on the roofs of the original farm buildings.
“After reviewing a number of different products, we selected the Neo Pantile in Natural Red because of its traditional appearance and the cost savings that could be achieved.
“We have been impressed by both the overall finish of the Neo Pantile and the support and guidance we have received from Sandtoft. Its technical team worked closely with our roofers throughout the project to provide advice on fitting the tiles.”
Nick Oldridge, sales and marketing director at Sandtoft, added: “The Neo Pantile was an ideal choice for Pittencrieff because it is interlocking and has an open gauge - these design features make a natural clay roof more affordable and accessible. Compared to a traditional pantile, the Neo Pantile is much easier to lay and can cut roof completion times by up to 30 per cent.”
The Neo Pantile is part of Sandtoft’s New Generation range and is available in a choice of four colours and with a 60-year Sandtoft guarantee.
