Whole House Ventilation:
Increasing demands for energy conservation have led to more efficient insulation, with the virtual elimination of draughts and ’natural’ ventilation in modern new build or renovated dwellings and commercial buildings. Whilst providing major economic and environmental benefits, these improvements have highlighted the importance of ventilation in providing a healthy living environment.
Inadequate ventilation leads to problems of condensation and, in extreme cases, to damp and mould growth as the result of normal living activities such as cooking, washing and showers.
A Healthier Living Environment:
In order to provide a healthier and more comfortable living environment free from the problems of condensation and air borne pollutants, it is necessary to balance three factors: heating, insulation and ventilation. The ideal is therefore to provide adequate ventilation in an energy efficient manner.
Traditional Solutions:
To date the most popular method of providing ventilation in the UK has been to install individual extract fans. However, this solution has a number of inherent disadvantages. Often noisy and unsightly, fans also require regular maintenance and cleaning, which is often not carried out. In addition, fans can be, and often are, disabled by the occupier as a result of noise irritation or to reduce perceived running costs. Finally, inexpertly positioned, fans may not provide adequate ventilation even when operating as intended.
The Ubbink Solution:
Ubbink Passive Stack Ventilation (PSV), Mechanically Assisted Ventilation Systems (MAVS) and Ventilation Systems with Heat Recovery (HRV) eliminate many of the disadvantages associated with traditional methods of ventilating buildings. Designed to ventilate the whole dwelling and not just individual rooms, PSV is unobtrusive, does not cause draughts and is energy efficient.
Passive Stack Ventilation employs natural air movement within a dwelling and the induced pressure differences caused by air flow over roof terminals, eliminating or reducing the need for moving components.
More complex installations which need Mechanically Assisted Ventilation Systems use an energy efficient fan unit and the system employs fewer moving components than traditional fan systems.
